how to buy a biomass system

be informed

Whether you are a business or an individual, get yourself up to speed on biomass.  Don’t just listen to sales people, find out more from independent sources that can give you an unbiased view.  Search out the negatives as well as the positives.

“…we have a perfect storm brewing with the untrained
selling the unsuitable to the uninformed…”

Quote by a commentator on Ed Davey’s speech at EcoBuild

The only sure way to know if the “untrained are trying to sell you the unsuitable” is to ensure that you are not one of the “uninformed”!

consider your options

Are you sure biomass is the best and most appropriate renewable energy solution for your circumstances?  Don’t jump in, until you are certain what it is right for you. For example, get an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) done on your domestic property, as this will give you the number of KWh that your property will be eligible to claim RHI payments on, over a 7 year period.

This will also enable you to model these figures against other renewable measures such as ground or air source heat pumps.

We can do an initial evaluation on your property for free, to check suitability, or if you prefer, we can even do a full EPC and/or Green Deal Assessment for small fee.  Alternatively, you can find your own Energy Assessor on the web, but either way, it is very well worth getting one done to define your starting point.

consider your choice of installer

Now days we cant help ourselves form doing a price comparison when buying everything from car insurance to a new kettle, so why should buying a biomass system be anything different.

We believe in being upfront and transparent from the onset. We recommend to our clients to get alternative quotations from reputable companies, so that they put themselves in the best possible position for making the right choice.

With biomass installations it’s going to be a lot harder to compare one quote with another, as most installers offer boilers from different manufacturers and of different build quality and warranty periods. They will also inevitably draw up different schematics to different specifications – some may include thermal stores, some may not…

As a customer, it is best to be as informed as possible, and ask the installer companies to quote on as near as possible, a ‘like for like’ scheme, so you can actually compare the quotes.

Its all very well giving you this advise, but if you don’t feel confident to draw up a basic design specification in the first place, that’s not much help!

what is biomass

what is biomass?

Biomass is biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. In the context of biomass for energy this is often used to mean plant based material, but biomass can equally apply to both animal and vegetable derived material.

why use biomass?

why use biomass?

Biomass is a renewable, low carbon fuel that is already widely available throughout the UK. Its production and use also brings additional environmental and social benefits.

but is it really sustainable?

but is it really sustainable?

Yes! As plants grow, each molecule of carbon dioxide they absorb from the air ends up as one atom of carbon in the plant, and two atoms of oxygen which are returned to the atmosphere. When the biomass is burned, each atom of carbon combines with two atoms of oxygen to give one molecule of carbon dioxide.

what type of boiler?

what type of boiler?

There are many different types of biomass boilers available, to suit every application so it may be easiest to first consider the three different types of fuel – wood pellets, wood chip & logs.

what we can do for you  –  free of charge

We would be happy to do a survey of your home/site of your proposed project, and get an idea of your current fossil fuel usage. We would then spend the time necessary to understand what you are trying to achieve, and from this we could present you with our design specification and a quote – you would be free to show our design specification to other installers.

We can also arrange for you to visit an operational biomass boiler installation so you can actually see what you are getting involved in.

We are all about the complete package, which also means we sell you much more than just a biomass boiler. We’re here to take the stress off you. From buffer tanks, fuel stores and complete boiler rooms – we’ve got the whole system covered.

There are many practical, financial and ethical issues to consider when getting a new heating system for your home…

buying a biomass system from us

This section will take you through the steps involved in safely buying a biomass system…

biomass is often chosen for older houses requiring large amounts of heat

Take advantage of the Renewable Heat Incentive to cover the cost of your transition to biomass. With the current Domestic RHI payments set at £0.122 per KWh, this could mean annual payments of over £3,000, for 7 years, for a standard family house with a heating requirement of 25,000KWh indicated on the EPC. Combine this with interest free loans, significantly reduced fuel costs when compared to oil, LPG or electricity, the financial arguments to transition to biomass, are worthy of very serious consideration. To find out more click here, or get in touch. For Non-Domestic installations the RHI payments last for 20 years and the return on investment can be very significant. For a more detailed explanation click here, or give us a call and we can talk you through it.
